From Coconut Shells to Charcoal Briquettes : The Transformation Process Step

Have you ever thought about how coconut shells can be turned into high-quality charcoal briquettes?

We have experience carrying out transformation processes to get maximum value from these natural resources. The following are the techniques and technology that we apply to produce superior quality coconut charcoal briquettes.

Production Process

  • 1. Collection and Sorting of Coconut Shells
  • 2. Carbonization
  • 3. Crushing and Grinding
  • 4. Mixing and Binder Addition

Our coconut farmers start the process by collecting coconut shells from trusted and sustainable sources. These shells are then sorted based on size and quality to ensure only the best shells are used for charcoal production. Sorting allows us to create a consistent product that meets our customers’ expectations.

Carbonization is a critical step in the transformation process. The dried coconut shells are placed in carbonization chambers, where high temperatures, typically between 500 and 800 degrees Celsius, are applied in the absence of oxygen. This process effectively removes impurities and volatile substances, leaving behind high-density charcoal.

After carbonization, the charcoal is crushed into small pieces to increase its surface area and improve its burning efficiency. It is then further ground into a fine powder to create a homogeneous mixture that will be used to form the briquettes.

To form the briquettes, the charcoal powder is mixed with a natural binder. This binder helps to provide cohesion and shape to the mixture, allowing it to be formed into briquettes without falling apart. We use tapioca starch as natural binders that are environmentally friendly and do not compromise the burning properties of the charcoal.

  • 5. Molding and Compression
  • 6. Drying and Curing
  • 7. Packaging
  • 8. Loading & Transport

The mixed charcoal powder and binder are then fed into a briquette molding machine. This machine applies pressure and compresses the mixture into briquette shapes. The density of the briquettes is carefully controlled to ensure consistent burning characteristics.

The freshly formed briquettes are then subjected to a drying process to remove any excess moisture. This ensures that the briquettes are ready for use and have optimal burn properties. Depending on the desired final moisture content, the drying process may take several days.

After thorough quality checks, the coconut charcoal briquettes are carefully packaged to protect them from moisture and external contaminants. If needed, each package can labeled with product information and batch details for traceability. Packaging is done in such a way that the briquettes retain their shape and density during transportation and storage.

Briquettes that have been packaged are ready to be loaded into containers and sent to the buyer’s destination country. Our company has a Factory Audit (FA) certificate from Carsurin, so buyers don’t need to “miss declare” at shipping documents when sending briquettes and can use official shipping services such as MSC Shipping, CMA CGM, etc
